There are air-conditioned bus services from Bangkok’s Northern Bus Terminal (Mochit 2 Bus Terminal) on Kamphaengphet 2 Road. The journey may take approximately 9-11 hours depending on traffic. Passengers can avail themselves of sleep overnight to prior an early morning arrival..
Chiang Rai has no direct train. You can take the train from Bangkok to Lampang or Chiang Mai and then continue to Chiang Rai by car or by bus .
From Bangkok, You can take Highway No. 1 (Phahonyothin Road) turn to route No. 32 passing Ayutthaya and change to route No. 11 passing Phitsanulok ,then turn left to Highway No. 103, drive through to Ngao District and turn right onto Highway No. 1 which takes you to Phayao and Chiang Rai . The other route is passing Chiang Mai and reach Chiang Rai by Chiang Mai – Mae Chan – Chiang Rai route.

From Chiang Mai Arcade Bus Terminal , it has both non-air conditioned and air conditioned buses leave daily to Chiang Rai. The buses take about 3 hours journey depending on traffic. Some buses are also continue to Mae Sai and Chiang Saen.
Chiang Rai may be reached by a scenic 4-6 hours long-tail boat ride along the Mae Kok River from Tha Thon in Chiang Mai. (depending on climatic conditions)
